What Are Battle Born LiFePO4 Batteries? 

At Battle Born Batteries, we manufacture deep cycle lithium batteries that utilize the most stable lithium chemistry on the market: lithium iron phosphate, more commonly known as LiFePO4. Our battery line is comprised of five battery models that are used most often in deep cycle applications to discharge and recharge over time.  

 

Here is the current Battle Born LiFePO4 battery line:

100 Ah 12V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery. The BB10012 is a drop-in replacement between a group 27 and group 31 battery. It is our flagship battery. It is designed to work in RVs, golf carts, boats big and small, and on off-grid setups.  

100 Ah 12V LifePO4 Heated Battery. The same great 100Ah 12V battery but with internal heating capabilities. The BB10012H comes with an enable switch and the necessary wires so that you can enable and disable your heated battery from anywhere in your system. It incorporates a proprietary, low draw technology to keep your battery warm and ready to charge in cold weather. They are great to get you out there and to help you stay out there, even in colder temperatures!

100 Ah 12 V GC2 LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery. The GC2 delivers 100 amps continuously and works as a drop-in replacement for a 6-volt golf cart battery. The GC2 also has the option to fit in different places and has staggered terminals for the potential to have custom bus bars in your system.  

What’s the difference between our BB10012 models and the GC2? 

 

50 Ah 12 V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery. The BB5012 delivers 60 amps continuously and is a perfect fit for kayaks or trolling motors. Weighing only 17.6 pounds, it provides plenty of power with its small size! The power to size ratio can’t be beaten.

50 Ah 24 V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery. In the same form as our flagship battery, the BB5024 is a drop-in lithium replacement for a leadacid and delivers 100 amps continuously with 24 volts 

The Chemistry: LiFePO4 Batteries

Our batteries use the safest lithium chemistry on the market. The cells are composed of lithium iron phosphate, which is commonly referred to as LiFePO4Lithium iron phosphate is more chemically stable, green, and sustainable when compared to other lithium chemistries. LiFePO4 batteries do not easily undergo thermal runaway either which is a great benefit. Thermal runaway is a process where the battery charger does not have any temperature control or the ability to properly function.   

Our 100 Ah battery has 120 individual cylindrical cells with burst capsules, so if anything happens to one cell, the burst capsule will activate and take that one out of the system. All our products are certified through a process that is tested by 3rd party laboratories. There are a variety of standards that we comply with, namely Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety certification company commonly known as UL. Our BB10012 and GC2 models are certified under UL 2054.

Our batteries also get listings for complying with international sales. This includes the IEC 62113 standard and the Department of Transportation listing of 38.3, which is necessary to ship our battery. The IEC listing is for the safe operation of portable sealed secondary cells and batteries.  

Internal BMS: The Battery Management System 

Our batteries are unique because they all contain a Battery Management System, or BMS, internally builtin. The BMS protects your battery and its components. The BMS protects you and your battery system from any strenuous circumstances you might encounter. When the voltage gets too high in a system, it leads to a reduced battery lifespan and safety issues.

An internal BMS is best for batteries when compared to external options. This is because it offers built-in protection that you don’t have to worry and can focus on your adventures. It helps with long term cycling by monitoring voltage, currents, and temperature extremes. When the voltage gets too high in a system, your battery lifespan can be prematurely reduced. It can also create potential safety issues.

The Battle Born internal BMS has low and high-temperature cutoffs. Our batteries discharge between –4 and 135 F and charge between 25 and 135 F. When the temperature falls outside of these safe ranges, the BMS shuts it down to prevent any damage.

The BMS will not allow a current that exceeds 100 amps for more than 30 seconds. It cuts off any surge over 200 amps after half a second. Although these thresholds have been verified with a DC load bank, the 30-second-high current threshold may be reduced from 200 amps to around 150 amps for certain highly variable loads through an inverter, like a microwave or space heater. After a high current disconnection, the battery will automatically reconnect after 5 seconds. The BMS activates a passive balancing process at the top of each charge cycle when the battery voltage exceeds around 14V. This ensures that all the cells remain at the same state of charge, which helps for peak longevity and performance.

Can Battle Born Lithium Batteries Be Mounted On Their Side?

Another reason our lithium-ion batteries work more efficiently in systems when compared to leadacid is their ability to be mounted in any position. The orientation isn’t relevant to their safety and performance of our LiFePO4 batteries. It doesn’t affect the electrolytes in any way. The batteries are designed to be drop-in replacements for leadacid in their specific form factors. 

They can also safely be mounted inside, unlike leadacid batteries, so there’s no need for them to constantly be exposed to the elements. If the connections are tight, you’re able to orient these batteries in any way, whether it’s upside down or right side up!  

Customers often install our batteries in applications subjected to rocky terrain and choppy waters. Battle Born Batteries can handle vibration and are tested to handle the most extreme limits.  

Battle Born LiFePO4 Batteries Superior Charging Experience

We’re also often asked as to why most lithium battery companies say not to bring their batteries to a full charge or below 20%. The batteries use cylindrical cells that can be drawn down completely. Other lithium batteries typically utilize prismatic or block cells for their chemistryAvoiding the use of prismatic or block cells allows our batteries to have a longer life span and to achieve 3,000 to 5,000 life cycles. Our internal BMS helps to discharge a battery without shortening the lifespan to protect you and your investment.  

You can also use the same charger for your replacement battery. The voltages used to charge up the battery are identical to voltages used for leadacid or flooded batteries. Battle Born Batteries have current, voltage, and temperature cutoff limits, so they aren’t identical to leadacid in that sense. The discharge curve is also different and sits at a higher voltage, so it’s possible that your charger might not recognize that the batteries are at their charge capacity or to be able to charge them up fully.
