Martin and Julie Johnson Go Off-Grid with Battle Born Batteries

Table of Contents

Here at Battle Born Batteries, we love powering our brand partnersโ€™ adventures, and off-grid living is no exception!ย Our goal of making reliable green energy storage accessible can come to fruition with off-grid systems like the Johnsonsโ€™.ย ย With a goal of being self-reliant and living sustainably, Martin and Julie Johnsonย no longerย dependย on grid tied powerย thanks to their Battle Born Batteries.ย

Meet the Johnsons:ย

Martin and Julie Johnson are theย โ€œDown to Earth Homesteaders,โ€ย currently living off-grid on seven acres inย Sandpoint,ย Idahoย with their two kids.ย Martin worked in the restaurant and HVAC/R industryย after college, whileย Julie studied in Argentina and worked at a daycare center.ย They met, married,ย and attended bible school before becoming missionaries.ย ย

Two people standing in a snowy forest.

From small mountain towns in Northern California, the couple prefers to be dependent on their own energy on their own time.ย Living inย Indonesiaย off-grid for four years has certainly prepared them for their current lifestyle!ย Duringย their timeย inย Indonesia,ย Martin and Julieย conducted missionary workย and worked on someย extraordinaryย projects.ย They collected rainwater through a gutter system,ย cooked with kerosene lamps,ย did laundry by hand,ย andย embarked on someย seriousย journeysย to getย aย phone signal.ย When they moved toย Indonesia,ย their daughter was onlyย two and they ended up having their son while living in the village.ย

In theย 20ย yearsย that theyโ€™ve been married, Martin and Julie have lived in 2 countries, 6 states,ย and 15 different houses.ย ย

For theย lastย 20 years, Martin has experiencedย living off-grid. His interest in the lifestyle began in California, where he grew up, andย jokes thatย James Westley Rawlsโ€™ โ€œPatriotsโ€ book seriesย inspiredย him to move to Idaho.ย ย

Their congregation, which supported their work in Indonesia,ย isย centeredย inย Sandpoint.ย They visited every 2ย yearsย toย check inย withย the progress of their mission workย and decided to plant their roots there to continue to help the church.ย

Whatโ€™s in Their System?ย

In their latestย video,ย Martin walks viewers through his solar powered system setup and the installation process for it. As the biggest upgrade yet for their system,ย theirย newest power system looks sleek and hasย worked wonders for the family!ย The couple believes that transparency is key with their viewers, especially with the amount of information out there.ย The content on their channel varies greatly- whether itโ€™s taste testing emergency supply foodย or documenting the preparation of moving from the city,ย fans of the family can always find something informative to watch!ย

Martin and Julieย know that gas-powered energy isย expensive,ย and electricย can beย much more efficient and cost effective.ย Whenย individuals being researchingย living off-grid,ย they consider power solutions theyโ€™re often already used to, like gas generators. Martin just released a newย videoย about the benefits of solar and howย itโ€™s a betterย long-termย investment (despite how shocking solar prices can be!)ย Even if gas seems like the way to go, the option to go solar is environmentally and budget friendly, which is Martinโ€™s key takeaway.ย

The Johnsonsย haveย the followingย components in theirย power system:ย

8 BB10012V Battle Born Batteriesย

2 Victron Smart Charge Controllers MPPT 100/50ย

1 BMV 712 Bluetooth Monitorย

ย 1 Victron SmartSolar MPPTย 150/70- Trย ย

-Blue Systems 100-30A MEGA/AMG Fuse Blockย

They also haveย aย 2000-wattย inverterchargerย from AIMS Power,ย tenย 300-wattย solar panels,ย andย accessoriesย to supplement the energy system.ย

โ€œAs a whole, theย system is working way better than it did last year,โ€ Martin said. โ€œWe can go a few days and then if we get some sunny days, it goes faster.โ€ย ย

Most days, theย Johnsons useย about 20 to 30 percent of theirย available power.ย Since the upgrade,ย theyโ€™ve been able toย buyย energyย intensiveย appliancesย such as a microwave and food processor, so Julieโ€™sย excitedย toย keep makingย homemade salsa!ย

โ€œWe donโ€™t really worry about how long [an appliance] has been running for now,โ€ Martin said. โ€œWe run it until weโ€™re done and donโ€™t worry about it anymore! We’re still using way less electricity than the average house, but with what we have we donโ€™t have to conserve like we did before.โ€ย

Whatโ€™sย Next?

When it comes to advice, Julie believes in the importance of minimalism when living off-grid or considering the lifestyle.ย ย

โ€œA lot of people donโ€™t realize that we donโ€™t need as much [power] as we think we do,โ€ she said. The family always intentionally monitors their light and power consumption, especially if everyoneโ€™s running something in their rooms.ย ย

โ€œWe didnโ€™t like the idea of being so dependent on other people or systems, so itโ€™s a challenge to see what we can do. We still go to the grocery store, but just trying to have our electricity and stocking up on food is our goal right now,โ€ said Julie. ย

Another important topic for people to consider is budgeting, because having the best system elements can get pricy.ย Oftentimes, the investment in more energyย efficientย appliancesย out of the gate can pay off drastically in anย off-gridย system.ย

Winter came early in Idaho, so unfortunately the Johnsons are waiting outย aย snowstorm to finish up the roofing over the garage and apartmentย above.ย They plan to work on moreย projects inside of theirย home to stayย busy during the colder months.ย They hope toย getย a well on the propertyย and a pump for it sometime in December.ย ย

Withย a goal to educate, entertain,ย and inspire their audience, the Johnsons are great at showcasing theirย entireย off-grid plan!ย Check outย the Johnsons onย theirย YouTube channelย andย blog.ย ย

  2. Hello,
Thatโ€™s awesome the steps you taken to go off the grid, is your Solar project still providing adequate power for your home ? Whatโ€™s your square footage ?
Good info on the video you folks have made.
Iโ€™m a Electrical Contractor in Phoenix, Az who at one time did Solar grid tied systems installs, commercial and residential work is hot, but the ways things are going, Iโ€™m thinking this might on another area we may start up.

Iโ€™m thinking on doing the same whatโ€™s your cost for the system you installed ?
