TukTukย YumYumย is the latest business on wheels to hit the streetsย ofย Reno, Nevada.ย Ownersย Debeyย Grimesย and Dan Faulknerย ย run the business out of a Piaggio Apeย TukTuk. Not wanting toย powerย the unique three-wheeled vehicleย withย noisy generators at events, Debey andย Danย beganย extensiveย research on lithium and how it can make a power system as efficiently (and quietly)ย as possible.ย With renewable energy on board,ย TukTuk YumYum isย partneringย with local vendors and small businessesย creatingย a funย and tastyย experience for locals andย visitorsย all acrossย northern Nevada.ย
Meet the Owners of TukTukย YumYum
Debeyย is a Reno-Tahoe area nativeย and hasย strong rootsย inย the Battle Born State. She earned her undergraduateย degreeย in Economicsย from the University of Nevada, Reno,ย andย her master’s degree in Hospitality Administration fromย the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.ย Inspired by her travels to Southeast Asia and her time spent riding around in rickshaws,ย Debeyย purchasedย aย Piaggio Apeย TukTukย from the Bello Moto dealership in San Francisco.ย
Uponย purchasing, Debey and herย co-owner and husband, Danย Faulkner, began their custom buildย of their new business on wheels. Danโs experience as a vehicle designer and builder allowedย themย toย create the perfect frozen yogurt truck out of their TukTuk.ย ย
Powering the Frozen Yogurt Truck
One of theย key partsย of the build includedย determiningย what power sourceย was the best option for their vehicle and for running their business. Despite theย hesitation of others to encourageย lithiumย battery usage in a low-speed vehicle, Debeyย knew a loud generator was out of the question for their frozen yogurtย truck.ย Aย generator would beย detrimental toย theirย productivity and success,ย and the investment in lithium batteries would be well worth it.ย
Getting local productsย for the buildย was important to Debeyย as she searched for local partsย andย services,ย usingย local companiesย such asย Renovate Wall Coverings and Reno Salvage to help bring the rig to life.ย With our Reno roots,ย Battle Born Batteriesย was the obvious choice forย theย TukTukโsย lithium battery power.ย When asked about their experienceย purchasing Battle Born,ย Debey stated, โWe just love what the company has going on and the technical sales team wasย very helpfulย in assisting us quickly with a purchase.โย ย
Following the purchase of their batteries and components,ย Dan installed and createdย aย unique lithium battery system that powersย theย TukTukย YumYum rig.ย Despiteย initialย challengesย during theย installation, withย a necessaryย inverterย upgradeย toย larger size,ย the batteriesย were easily wiredย in,ย and the system was quickly up and running.ย ย
TukTuk YumYumย runs on the following components:ย
- 4ย BBGC3 Gamechanger 3.0 Battle Born Batteriesย
- 1ย Victron Quattro 5,000W 12V Inverter/Chargerย
- 1ย CSLย
- 1ย Victron BMV-712ย
- 1ย Victron VE Bus Smart Dongleย
- 1ย Victron RJ 45 0.9m cableย
Afterย puttingย their new systemย to use, Debey and Danย immediatelyย noticed the drastic difference betweenย powering their business withย a generator andย usingย Battle Bornย Batteries.ย Theirย TukTuk isย efficient, sustainable,ย andย thereโs no noise distractionย for customersย purchasing their tasty frozen treats. Itย runsย on average, forย 4-5 hours straight, and Debey and Dan are confident they have the power to last through any event.ย ย
Withย aย lithium battery system, TukTuk YumYumย canย power everythingย itย needsย to carry outย business.ย ย
Reno’s Frozen Yogurt Truck On Wheels
The TukTuk is equipped with twoย frozen yogurt machines to churn out fun seasonal flavorsย such asย peppermintย andย eggnog,ย in additionย toย the classics,ย chocolate and vanilla.ย Thereย isย a plethora of toppingsย to choose from–sprinkles, fresh fruit, and gummy bears–that takeย every cup ofย frozen yogurt to the next level.ย ย
When asked about her goals forย TukTuk YumYum, Debey said,ย โWe seek to add a bit of extra fun to everyoneโs day.ย Itโs good for the soul to take a moment to enjoy a simple, delicious, and fun treat.โย This isย accomplishedย as they attend local and city events, weddings, birthdays, and business partnerships.ย
TukTukย YumYum hasย participatedย inย local business fairs, includingย ย Wandering Wyld pop-up events,ย which isย hosted throughout the Reno-Tahoe area.ย These events were curated to help get small businesses working togetherย and increase their brand recognition in the local community.ย During theย pandemic shutdownsย overย the last two years, Debey said it was helpful to have small businesses get creative and come together.ย TukTuk YumYum is also available to be booked for private events and weddings. On theirย website,ย itโsย easy to select the type of event, desired date,ย and time, and request pricing quotes based on the number of guestsย and length of time.ย Inย addition to their regular services,ย TukTuk YumYumย has plans to partner with theย Nevada Discovery Museumย atย educational eventsย for kids.ย ย
