Here at Battle Born Batteries, we value getting out there and staying out there with your family. The Hooperย familyย feelsย the most at homeย on the road, traveling the country in their Keystoneย Montana. Ourย team lovesย to see what the Hoopers are up to andย whereย they willย go next!ย
Meet the Hoopers:ย
Andrew and Janelle of Home with the Hoopers have been journeyingย forย the pastย four years with their two sons,ย Corbinย and Wyatt.ย Andrewโs love for travel and the outdoors was fostered atย a youngย age.ย Heย grew upย camping and lived in a camper during college for a few years instead of a dorm. Janelle had little to no experience with RVs orย camping before meeting Andrewย untilย the two of them started going on weekend trips that just kept getting longer.ย
Whenย the Hoopersย were first checking out trailers, they walked into the dealership with the goal of looking, not buying- butย they ended up driving a new Keystone toy-haulerย of the lot that same day.ย ย
Andrew and Janelleย donโtย consider themselves to beย planners, they just follow their gut feelings.ย When they first toyed with the idea of living tiny full time,ย they gaveย themselvesย sixย monthsย to beย on the road.ย A few days into their two-week trial runย theyย ended up putting their house on theย market.ย Theyย knew that this lifestyle was the one for them!ย ย
The first place they stayed at was an RVย park,ย andย theyย bounced around between different Texas state parks. As part of the stateโs Park Host Program,ย they were able to live at the park whileย assistingย with visitorsย and helping the park rangers withย operational duties.ย ย
Now, the Hoopersย feel very blessed toย have the opportunity toย travel and work remotely.ย Andrew works from the road as an accountant and Janelle has a background in pediatric nursing. In many instances during their travels, Andrew would have to fly back home and work for some time apart from the rest of the family.ย ย
โBeing full-time on the road is a very involved process, but itโs also really fun,โ Janelle said. โLast summer we spent some time in Alaska and I left a piece of my heart there.โ As for Andrew, his favorite places include Yosemite, Grand Tetons,ย andย any place withย natural, unpaved hot springs.ย
The family just came back from a trip to Sedona, where they spent a week and a half in Red Rocks Canyon. They were in the town during the time of the nationwide shutdown earlier this year and were able to return and spend more time hiking and seeing the iconic canyons.ย ย
Their favorite activities as a family areย spentย outsideย hiking, geocaching, and exploring the local sights,ย whichย are far superior to staring at screens all day! Andrew makes it a top priority to get the family immersed in as much as possible when visiting a place, whether itโs checking outย top-rated restaurantsย on Yelp,ย orย a small-town independent bookstore.ย Their most recentย YouTube videoย showcased a fun family outing where they went sand sledding at White Sands National Park in New Mexico during the summer!ย ย
Their kids love being in nature as well, with Corbinโs favorite hot springs being โthe onesย [inย British Columbia]ย that wereย super hot!โ The entire family enjoyed visiting British Columbia and traveled up the Dempsterย Highway, aย road that is commonly used by ice road truckersย to travel cross-country.ย ย
โWe tend to take theย camperย placesย that a lot of people would usually be nervous to,โ Janelle said. โBut weโll try anything once, weโve done it all!โย ย
The family loves to coast from park to park, and originally had the goal of spending the entire year boondocking and traveling the West Coastย whenย the national shutdown occurred. They spent several weeks stationary and admitted to feeling,ย โveryย stir-crazyโ during that time!ย ย
Andrew and Janelle suggestย keeping a positive attitudeย and being prepared, especially during the time of the pandemic. They knowย allย tooย wellย anything can happenย on theย roadย so beingย preparedย with all kinds of tools for every type of situationย is not somethingย they recommend skipping out on.ย The Hoopers joked that theyย oftenย haveย hadย toย MacGyverย things on the rigย whenย theyย brokeย andย gotย creative with solutions.
One example is the time their camper accidentally flooded while going over a rocky road from Canada to Alaska.ย ย
โThe road was so bumpy, it accidentally turned our kitchen faucet on,โ Janelle said. โWeย ended upย drainingย about 50 gallons from our rig, so weโve experienced a lot.โย
They alsoย advise people toย follow their gut feelings becauseย theyโreย usuallyย right.ย Itโsย how they were able to take theย leap to get out there and stay out there in the first place.ย
โWeโve learned so much over time and as open books, we love to share our experiences so we can help make it easier for people who are just starting out,โ Janelle said.ย
Whatโs in Their System?ย
Hereโs what Andrew and Janelle have in theirย 2020 Keystone Montana 3855 BR Legacy Edition, nicknamed Eleanor:ย
–4 Victron BlueSolar MPPT Charge Controllers 100/50ย
Theย fourย solarย chargeย controllers areย connectedย toย 1,760 watts of solar.ย
Their battery system is so strong, Andrew and Janelle can run Andrewโs parentsโ motorhome and all their power draws as well.ย Whetherย itโsย running the television, hairdryer,ย or microwave, their extended family can have all the comforts of home even ifย theyโreย miles away from it!ย While they have a small generator that they used the first time when boondocking, they believe their system is more than enoughย to support their power supplies.ย ย
Sinceย Andrew’s parents own a Keystone,ย it helpedย influence his and Janelleโs decision to upgrade the family intoย the newest edition.ย The family loves being ambassadors of Keystone Montana, a company we partnered with last year to launch theย Super SolarFlex power system!ย
Their son Corbin loved to help with the generator, and it was his job to turn it on and off whenever the family needed it!ย ย
Whatโs Next?ย ย
The Hoopers recently purchased land near their hometown in Texas, and plan to have aย barndominiumย (a barn style house)ย built on the property for them to use as a home base. They want to be close enough to Andrewโs family, and having 58 acres makes it nice to be back home.ย
Andrewย has been working in theย office more, so the family willย eventuallyย move towardsย being part timeย in the rig. Theyโll stillย go onย tripsย whenย possibleย while beingย close enoughย toย take care of the cattle on the property.ย ย
