Lithium Batteries Dominate Pro Bass Boats

Table of Contents

If youโ€™re interested in outfitting your bass boat with lithium batteries, youโ€™ve come to the right place. Lithium battery technology provides countless benefits that are especially important for professional anglers. Not only are these batteries lightweight and compact, but theyโ€™re also long-lasting and extremely reliable.

However, with all the information out there, itโ€™s hard to know where to start. Keep scrolling to read all about lithium bass boat batteries, including specific power needs, benefits, and which anglers have switched to lithium.

What Is a Pro Bass Boat?

A professional bass boat is a vessel specifically designed for bass fishing. It has ample seating and deck space, making it great for casting, as well as a thin draft for shallow waters. In fact, most bass boats have an average draft of 8 to 10 inches, making it possible to fish in a variety of areas.

Typically made of either fiberglass or aluminum, bass boats are lightweight and stealthy. But donโ€™t let that fool you. Bass boats can hold plenty of fishing gear.

What Are the Power Needs of a Pro Bass Boat?

The power needs of a pro bass boat largely depend on the boat’s size, the engine’s thrust, and how long you plan on being out on the water. However, an average-sized bass boat will likely need a 350-volt electric motor rated at about 50 horsepower. This will provide enough power for hulls rated from 25 to 50 horsepower without weighing down the boat or overpowering it. This will allow your boat to top off at about 25 miles per hour.

As for your battery needs, a great way to calculate the run time of your engine is by dividing the battery’s total capacity by the total max amp draw of your motor. Then multiply this by 60 minutes. This will give you the run time for your motor at its maximum power setting and allow you to determine which battery youโ€™ll need based on how long you plan to be out on the water.

Why Are Lithium Batteries Perfect for Pro Bass Boats?

Lithium batteries are perfect for pro bass boats for a variety of reasons. Letโ€™s look at the top three reasons you should consider lithium for your boat.

Pro Anglers Need to Have Long-Lasting Batteries

Tournaments are typically an all-day affair, so having a long-lasting battery is non-negotiable. Luckily, lithium batteries are the most energy-dense battery on the market and can handle deep discharges (almost 100%). In comparison, lead-acid batteries should only be discharged down to about 50% capacity. This means that you can use lithium batteries for at least twice as long.

Pro Anglers Need to Have Lightweight Batteries

A lightweight boat needs lightweight batteries, and lithium batteries are, on average, 55% lighter than lead-acid batteries. Combine this with the ability to discharge them to almost full capacity, and choosing lithium truly becomes a no-brainer.

Pro Anglers Need to Have Reliable Batteries

If you plan on competing day after day, the last thing you want to worry about is your batteries. Luckily, lithium batteries require very little maintenance and are just plain easy to use. Thereโ€™s no wondering whether or not you need to water them or if you accidentally discharged them too deeply. Just recharge them and trust that theyโ€™ll get you to where you need to go.

Which Professional Anglers Have Battle Born Lithium Bass Boat Batteries?

Thereโ€™s a reason why nearly two dozen professional anglers have chosen Battle Bornโ€™s lithium-ion batteries for their boats. They want a reliable product that they know will work time and time again.

Anglers like Brian Robison, Justin Patrick, and Mikey Meisenheimer have partnered with Battle Born because of the dependable power lithium provides. To see the full list of professional anglers whoโ€™ve chosen lithium, visit our website

How Many Lithium Bass Boat Batteries Does a Pro Angler Need?

The number of batteries a pro angler needs largely depends on their boat and competing style. For example, Chris Groh has a Phoenix 20PHX with a 4Stroke Mercury 250 ProXS. He also has a Minn-Kota and Humminbird graphs and trolling motor. He meets his energy needs with three 100Ah lithium batteries.

In contrast, Oliver Ngy from Big Bass Dreams owns a 2021 Vexus VX21 with a Garmin Force trolling motor. He opts for five 100Ah lithium batteries. It really all depends on your boat size, motor, and how long you want to be out on the water.

Can a Lithium Battery Start a Boat?

While the LiFePO4 Deep Cycle battery can start a boat (and can act as a backup starter), theyโ€™re not designed to be used as starter batteries. Because of this, you should have a separate starter battery for a typical gas engine. These batteries typically use lead-acid technology and can handle the frequent deep discharges that come with starting an engine.

Why Do Fishing Kayaks Need Batteries?

If youโ€™ve ever seen a fishing kayak, you probably know theyโ€™re larger and wider than your average kayak. Combine this with the hands-on nature of fishing, and paddling becomes out of the question. This is why most anglers choose to have an electric trolling motor for their fishing kayak, which of course, requires batteries.

Can you guess which type of batteries we recommend to power your fishing kayak? Lithium, of course!

Do Pro Bass Anglers Have a Special Charger for Lithium Batteries?

While lithium batteries can charge off of a standard battery charger, we donโ€™t recommend it. Lithium batteries require a special charger designed to charge at a specific voltage and ensure the battery functions as it should. It will also allow you to use the full capacity of your lithium batteries, which is why you bought them in the first place!

Are Battle Born Lithium Batteries Worth It for Pro Anglers?

Lithium batteries typically have higher upfront costs than lead-acid batteries. Nevertheless, the longer lifespan, higher energy density, and low maintenance of lithium pay off greatly in the long run. Not to mention the reliability, low weight, and dependability. So yes, we believe lithium batteries are absolutely worth it for pro anglers.
