As the first to bring these features to the market, Wakespeed has worked closely with Victron Energy to offer an extension of Victron’s DVCC (Distributed Voltage and Current Control) method to Wakespeed’s WS500 and WS500 Pro Advanced Alternator Regulators.
Enabling DVCC allows for an additional aspect of total system management and aggregates more than one Lynx Smart BMS for improved high energy system resilience. In the case of one BMS going offline, automatic failovers will take place.
BMS aggregation is a capability Wakespeed has had for many, many years now, and the additional extension of these features to the Victron Lynx Smart BMS further builds upon these existing capabilities.
A key feature of the WS500 Pro is its ease of use – with the ability to simply take the alternator charging device out of the box and connect as few as four wires. Nothing else is needed to begin using this smart alternator charging solution.
For users that have CAN connections to a smart RV-C battery solution, such as Battle Born Batteries with Dragonfly IntelLigence™, the WS500 Pro will self-configure in a safe and usable way.
The advanced ‘Generator Mode’ feature allows users to turn a system’s engine into a dedicated generator, focusing the alternator’s performance on creating energy to replenish the battery bank quickly.
Specifically designed for sustainability, ‘Generator Mode’ enables users to expend less fuel and drive more energy to the alternator.
The reality was that I had it out of the box and my iPhone connected to it within 10 minutes—yes, it’s that easy.
And that highlights one of the features I like the best on the original WS500 and the Pro: both can be powered up on the bench so we can program them before installing on the boat.
The van has a 48-volt system, and even crazier than that is the charging capabilities with Wakespeed that allows for innovative ways to charge with the alternator at higher capacities.
Having Wakespeed, in conjunction with IntelLigence batteries, this is a whole new charging world for us – charging efficiency and the speed of how we can do that.
Pushing the limits of my adventures and my content creating into these colder weathers, these colder extremes, pushing it in that direction is doing something nobody else was doing on YouTube at the time. And so, having the equipment in your vehicle is part of the fun challenge – ‘How can I make this vehicle capable of going out and sustaining me as a filmmaker?’ That’s also taking a miniature film studio on wheels out into these conditions.
Having power is absolutely key to be able to run this kind of thing off-grid. You’re charging camera batteries, computers, and lights and keeping yourself alive and comfortable.
Recently, we had the opportunity to work with the new Pro model, and what a game changer! Not having to wire to do programming is a huge improvement and we’re really loving the ability to charge at high rates.
We recently did a Lagoon 42 with American Power Systems’ 255 amp 12V alternators and the Wakespeed Pro, producing about 5kW.
The Wakespeed WS500 Pro Bluetooth® Alternator Regulator comes packaged in a durable plastic box and integrates with the Wakespeed Configuration and Monitoring Utility App, available for both Android and Apple devices.
While both Mobile Apps offer identical features, the Android version allows for USB connectivity, a feature not available for iOS due to Apple’s restrictions.
The WS500 Pro is the latest iteration of Wakespeed’s advanced DC charge regulator, building on the proven foundation of the WS500.
The WS500 Pro introduces several enhancements, including wireless Bluetooth® connectivity, eliminating manual configuration with a Plug-n-Go feature for quick deployment by simply connecting it to a battery and alternator.
Using the Wakespeed Configuration and Monitoring Utility App, power on the WS500 Pro, and ‘Scan for Bluetooth Regulator’ to find your device.
Once connected, users can set a password, access monitoring and configuration features through the app, and manage multiple regulators.
Users can connect a WS500 Pro directly using an Android OTG cable, which is particularly useful for advanced recovery techniques or in production environments where multiple devices are in use.
The OTG connection is a valuable tool for both troubleshooting and advanced operations, providing a reliable alternative to Bluetooth®.
When you power on a factory-fresh WS500 Pro and connect to it via the Wakespeed App, users will be prompted to set a new password. Setting a new password is critical for security and prevents unauthorized access and potential damage.
Read-only mode is a unique and beneficial feature of the WS500 Pro that allows service technicians or OEMs to access the regulator’s data without making changes.
Read-only mode is designed for situations where you either don’t know the password or need to access a regulator without making changes.
For OEMs or production environments, read-only mode allows for verification of installations without setting a password initially. The final user can set their password later, enhancing security.
The Plug-n-Go functionality simplifies the installation process, leveraging Wakespeed’s extensive experience with high-energy systems. With Plug-n-Go, users will connect a regulator to a compatible battery and alternator, then the system automatically configures itself with default settings.
The WS500 Pro can be integrated with Dragonfly IntelLigence™ smart lithium battery technology and the associated HUB device.
The current HUB device has a built-in short-range terminator. However, you can use an additional black terminator at one end of the cable for a more precise setup. If connecting to other equipment, like a Victron Cerbo, use the specific crossover cables and terminators provided for each system.
Users can perform over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates on the WS500 Pro using wireless Bluetooth® connectivity.
Firmware is stored in the cloud, and the Wakespeed App will automatically check the current firmware version and prompt users to update if new firmware is available.
Users can also update firmware via sideload in Expert Mode, which is an alternative to cloud-based OTA updates. The Ws500 Pro’s Expert Mode will unlock additional features, including the option to select a firmware file from your local device.
The sideload method is particularly useful for testing versions or custom firmware unavailable through the cloud.
The WS500 Pro system supports only one Bluetooth® connection at a time. This limitation is crucial for maintaining security and preventing simultaneous connections from multiple devices.
Once disconnected from one Bluetooth® device, scanning with a new device will then show available connections.
Password recovery is essential for cases where users forget or need to reset their passwords. To recover a password, users will follow a straightforward process that ensures only those with physical access to the device can recover the password, enhancing security.
The WS500 Pro can be installed in two configurations: Always On Operation, where the device remains active regardless of the engine status, allowing constant monitoring, and Engine-Only Operation, where the device powers up only when the engine is running.
Continuous Always On power is useful for monitoring battery metrics even when the engine is off.
Wakespeed has nearly a decade of proven performance and has been chosen by many of the most respected coach manufacturers and luxury boatbuilders in the industry. The WS500 Pro has set the standard for reliability, safety, and power output.
Yes, the WS500 Pro can be configured for any system voltage between 12 volts and 54 volts. In 12V, 24V, and 48V systems. the WS500 Pro will auto-detect and set the charging voltage values for correct levels based on the system voltage.
This depends, to a great extent, on the application. In most automotive applications, like RV and commercial truck installations, the alternator is an integrated part of the engine computer control. In most cases, the internal regulator communicates with the engine computer, and the addition of a smart regulator will not comply with the demands of the emission system. In that case, the addition of a secondary alternator dedicated to the house battery loads will be a better option. That secondary alternator will be able to take its charging direction from the WS500 Pro.
The same holds true for marine applications, where some "electronic" engines use information from the standard alternator to control emissions and output. In that case, a secondary alternator may be necessary.
The WS500 Pro retains the robust hardware design that has become a staple of Wakespeed products. With over a decade of experience in developing high-energy systems, Wakespeed has ensured that the WS500 Pro continues to deliver safe and functional control for DC systems. The firmware remains consistent with that of the WS500, adding Bluetooth® capabilities and ensuring that all proven features of the previous model are carried over.
The addition of Bluetooth® connectivity marks a substantial shift in how users interact with their systems. The upgraded CPU supports Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE), allowing for wireless monitoring and configuration, which is particularly beneficial for installers and technicians, providing an effortless way to assess and adjust settings both during initial installation and in real-world scenarios.
The Bluetooth® enhancement not only modernizes the user experience but also opens up new possibilities for monitoring and control, making it a noteworthy advancement in marine electrical systems.
The Wakespeed Configuration and Monitoring Utility App is available in the Google Play Store and Apple Store for both Android and iOS devices. While both Mobile Apps offer identical features, the Android version allows for USB connectivity, a feature not available for iOS due to Apple’s restrictions.
