What Are Battle Born LiFePO4 Batteries?ย 

Atย Battle Born Batteries, we manufacture deep cycle lithium batteries that utilize the most stable lithium chemistry on the market:ย lithium iron phosphate,ย moreย commonly known as LiFePO4. Our battery line is comprised of five battery models that are used most often in deep cycleย applications to discharge and recharge over time.ย ย 

 

Here is the current Battle Born LiFePO4 battery line:

100 Ah 12V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery. The BB10012 is aย drop-inย replacement betweenย aย groupย 27 and group 31 battery. It is our flagship battery. It isย designed toย work inย RVs, golf carts, boats big and small, andย onย off-grid setups.ย ย 

100 Ah 12V LifePO4 Heated Battery.ย The same great 100Ah 12V battery but with internal heating capabilities.ย The BB10012H comes with anย enable switch andย the necessary wires so that you can enable and disable your heated battery from anywhere in your system. It incorporates a proprietary, low draw technology to keep your battery warm and ready to charge in cold weather. They are great to get you out there and to help you stay out there, even in colder temperatures!

100 Ah 12 V GC2 LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery.ย The GC2 delivers 100 amps continuously and works as a drop-in replacement for aย 6-voltย golf cart battery.ย The GC2ย alsoย has the option to fit in different places and has staggered terminals for the potential to have custom bus bars in your system. ย

50 Ah 12 V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery.ย The BB5012 deliversย 60ย amps continuously and is a perfect fit forย kayaks or trolling motors. Weighing only 17.6 pounds, it provides plenty of power with its small size! The power to size ratio can’t be beaten.

50 Ah 24 V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery. In the same form as our flagship battery, the BB5024 isย a drop-in lithium replacement for a leadacid and deliversย 100ย amps continuouslyย with 24 volts.ย ย 

The Chemistry: LiFePO4 Batteries

Ourย batteries useย the safest lithium chemistry on the market.ย Theย cells are composed of lithium iron phosphate,ย which isย commonly referred to as LiFePO4.ย Lithium iron phosphate is more chemically stable, green,ย and sustainable when compared to other lithium chemistries.ย LiFePO4 batteries do not easily undergo thermal runaway either which is a great benefit. Thermal runaway is a process where the battery charger does not have any temperature control or the ability to properly function.ย ย ย 

Our 100 Ah battery has 120 individual cylindrical cells with burst capsules, so if anything happens to one cell,ย the burst capsule will activate and take that one out of the system.ย Allย our products are certified through a process that is tested by 3rdย party laboratories. There are a variety of standards thatย we complyย with, namely Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety certification company commonly known as UL. Our BB10012 and GC2 models are certifiedย underย UL 2054.

Our batteries also get listings for complying with international sales. This includes the IEC 62113 standard and the Department of Transportation listing of 38.3, which is necessary to ship our battery. The IEC listing is for the safe operation of portable sealed secondary cells and batteries.ย ย 

Internal BMS: The Battery Management Systemย 

Our batteries are unique because they all containย a Battery Management System, or BMS,ย internallyย builtin.ย Theย BMS protects your battery and its components. The BMS protects you and your battery system from any strenuous circumstances you might encounter.ย When the voltage gets too highย in a system, itย leads to a reduced battery lifespan and safety issues.

An internal BMS is best for batteries when compared to external options. This is because it offers built-in protection that you donโ€™t have to worry and can focus on your adventures. It helps with long term cycling by monitoring voltage, currents, and temperature extremes. When the voltage gets too high in a system, your battery lifespan can be prematurely reduced. It can also create potential safety issues.

The Battle Born internal BMS has low and high-temperature cutoffs. Our batteries discharge between โ€“4 and 135 F and charge between 25 and 135 F. When the temperature falls outside of these safe ranges, the BMS shuts it down to prevent any damage.

The BMS will not allow a current that exceeds 100 amps for more than 30 seconds. It cuts off any surge over 200 amps after half a second. Although these thresholds have been verified with a DC load bank, the 30-second-high current threshold may be reduced from 200 amps to around 150 amps for certain highly variable loads through an inverter, like a microwave or space heater. After a high current disconnection, the battery will automatically reconnect after 5 seconds. The BMS activates a passive balancing process at the top of each charge cycle when the battery voltage exceeds around 14V. This ensures that all the cells remain at the same state of charge, which helps for peak longevity and performance.

Can Battle Born Lithium Batteries Be Mounted On Their Side?

Another reason our lithium-ion batteries work more efficientlyย in systemsย whenย compared to leadacidย isย theirย ability to be mounted in any position. Theย orientation isnโ€™t relevant to their safety and performanceย of our LiFePO4 batteries. It doesn’t affect the electrolytes in any way. The batteries are designed to be drop-in replacements for leadacid in their specific form factors.ย 

They can also safelyย be mounted inside, unlike leadacid batteries,ย so thereโ€™s no need for them to constantly be exposed to the elements.ย Ifย the connections are tight,ย youโ€™reย ableย to orient these batteries in any way, whether itโ€™s upside down or right side up!ย ย 

Customers often install our batteries in applications subjected to rocky terrain and choppy waters. Battle Born Batteries can handle vibration andย are tested to handle the most extreme limits.ย ย 

Battle Born LiFePO4 Batteries Superior Charging Experience

Weโ€™re also often askedย as toย why most lithium battery companies sayย not to bring their batteries to a full charge or below 20%.ย Theย batteriesย use cylindrical cellsย that can be drawn downย completely.ย Other lithium batteries typicallyย utilizeย prismatic or block cellsย for their chemistry.ย Avoiding the use of prismaticย or block cellsย allowsย our batteriesย to haveย a longerย life span andย toย achieveย 3,000 to 5,000 life cycles.ย Our internalย BMSย helps to discharge a battery without shortening the lifespanย to protect you and your investment.ย ย 

You can also use the same charger for your replacement battery. The voltages used to charge up the battery are identical to voltages used forย leadacidย or flooded batteries. Battle Born Batteries have current, voltage,ย and temperature cutoff limits, so they arenโ€™t identical to leadacid in that sense. The dischargeย curve is also different and sits at a higher voltage, so itโ€™s possible that your charger might not recognize that the batteries are at their charge capacity or to be able to charge them up fully. ย

  1. The only comment I see above of why to buy Battle Born vs other LiFePO4 is in regard to prismatic cell drop in type. There are quite a few prismatic ready made batteries at various capacities that have BMS with the same protections as BB and are sometimes significantly cheaper with comparable warranties. SOK batteries have a PDF showing over 3500 100% DOD with still 83% capacity remaining and they are user serviceable if a cell goes bad or the BMS fails – BB is not user serviceable. I know some far east battery manufacturers are scams, but not all are and thanks to youtube people like Wes Prowse and others that buy and test the batteries the general public does have more choices.

    My question is why should I buy Battle Born when compared to other LiFePO4 batteries on the market?

  2. Hello, I have a 1983 MCI bus which has a 12/24 volt system. I am replacing inverter/charger to a Freedom 3024. It had 8 6 volt batteries in series. Can I replace them with LifePo4 in a reduced quantity in series and keep 12v/24v system? Thx James.
