One of the best parts of RV travel is waking up somewhere new. Your morning view might be a mountain range, a quiet desert, or a beach that would never be visible from a traditional kitchen window.
Life on the road offers freedom, self-reliance, and a closer connection with the places you visit. It also changes the way you think about basic resources. At home, you can plug in a coffee maker, blender, or oven without considering where the electricity comes from. While boondocking, every appliance draws from a limited supply of stored energy.
That does not mean you have to give up your favorite kitchen appliances. With the right battery bank, inverter, wiring, and charging system, you can run many residential-style cooking appliances from your RV batteries. That can include a convection oven, Instant Pot, air fryer, blender, induction cooktop, microwave, or standard drip coffee maker.
The key is understanding how much power each appliance needs and making sure every part of the RV electrical system is sized to deliver it.

Off-Grid Cooking Essentials
Cooking off-grid can involve several different heat sources. Many RVers use a combination, choosing between fire, propane, and electricity based on the weather, campsite rules, available battery capacity, and the meal they plan to prepare.
Over the Fire
Humans have been preparing meals over open fires for thousands of years, and campfire cooking remains a simple and enjoyable way to make food outdoors.
With firewood, kindling, a fire starter, and basic cookware, you can grill vegetables, roast food on sticks, or prepare full meals in cast-iron pans and Dutch ovens. A campfire also creates a natural gathering place at the end of a travel day.
However, fires are not always permitted. Burn bans, wind, rain, campsite restrictions, and a lack of suitable firewood can make campfire cooking unreliable as your only option. Always follow local fire regulations and fully extinguish the fire when you are finished.

Propane and Traditional Camping Equipment
Portable propane appliances expanded what travelers could cook away from home. Propane camp stoves provide controllable heat without the work of building and maintaining a fire. Propane grills, installed RV ranges, and ovens can also reduce the amount of electricity needed for meal preparation.
Use each appliance only in the environment approved by its manufacturer. Portable camp stoves and outdoor grills should never be used inside an RV, camper, tent, or other enclosed space because combustion can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
Propane remains convenient, but it requires tank storage, safe handling, and periodic refilling. For RVers who want to reduce propane use or avoid running a generator, battery-powered electric cooking offers another option.
Electric RV Kitchen Appliances
Electric cooking makes it possible to prepare meals without building a fire, refilling a propane cylinder, or listening to a generator.
An appropriately designed battery system can power:
- RV convection ovens and convection microwaves
- Instant Pots and other pressure cookers
- Air fryers and toaster ovens
- Drip coffee makers
- Countertop blenders
- Induction cooktops
- Electric griddles
- Slow cookers
- Refrigerators and freezers
Most of these are 120-volt AC appliances. Because an RV battery bank stores DC power, an inverter is needed to convert the battery’s DC electricity into the AC electricity used by a household outlet.

Can You Run RV Cooking Appliances on Battery Power?
Yes, but the appliance, inverter, battery bank, wiring, overcurrent protection, and charging system must all be sized appropriately.
There are two different questions to answer:
- Can the system deliver enough power at one time?
- Does the battery bank store enough energy to run the appliance for the desired amount of time?
The first question is measured in watts. The second is measured in watt-hours or amp-hours.
A 1,500-watt RV convection oven may require the system to deliver roughly 1,500 watts while its heating element is operating. Running it for 30 minutes would use substantially less energy than running it for two hours, even though its instantaneous power requirement remains the same.
Estimated Battery Use for Common RV Cooking Appliances
The following examples assume a 12.8-volt lithium battery bank and approximately 90% inverter efficiency. They are planning estimates, not guaranteed consumption figures. Heating elements cycle, pressure cookers reduce power after reaching temperature, and motor loads can have brief startup surges.

The current 6-quart Instant Pot Duo is rated at ~1,000 watts, while the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is rated at ~1,800 watts. Full-size blenders vary considerably; one current Ninja model lists 1,200 running watts and an 1,800-watt peak rating.

What Size Inverter and Battery Bank Do You Need for RV Cooking?
High-wattage cooking appliances cannot be evaluated by battery capacity alone. A large battery bank connected to an undersized inverter still will not run the appliance. Likewise, a large inverter connected to a battery bank that cannot provide the necessary current may trigger a battery-management shutdown or create excessive voltage drop.
Check the Appliance’s Input Wattage
Look for a label on the back or underside of the appliance. It may list watts directly or provide voltage and amperage.
When only volts and amps are shown, estimate the load using:
Watts = Volts × Amps
For example, an appliance rated at 120 volts and 12.5 amps has an input of approximately 1,500 watts.
For microwaves, do not confuse the advertised cooking output with the electrical input. A “1,000-watt microwave” may require considerably more than 1,000 watts from the outlet.
Size the Inverter for Simultaneous Loads
The inverter’s continuous output must be high enough for every AC appliance operating at the same time.
A 1,800-watt oven on a 2,000-watt inverter leaves very little capacity for a coffee maker, water heater, battery charger, or other AC load. Load management may be necessary even when the inverter can run each appliance individually.
Battle Born’s current inverter-sizing guidance recommends a minimum of approximately 100Ah of Battle Born battery capacity for every 1,000 watts of inverter capacity. Under that guideline, a 2,000-watt inverter should generally be paired with at least 200Ah of battery capacity.
A pure sine wave inverter is generally the best choice for an RV kitchen because it supplies clean AC power suitable for appliances with electronic controls, timers, variable-speed motors, and other sensitive components. Battle Born’s 2,000-watt inverter, for example, provides 2,000 watts of continuous pure sine wave output with additional surge capability.
Confirm the Battery Bank Can Supply the Current
A 1,500-watt AC appliance may require approximately 130 amps from a 12.8-volt battery bank after accounting for inverter losses.
That matters because the internal battery management system has a maximum continuous-current rating. Battle Born’s BB10012 and BBGC2 100Ah batteries are rated for 100 amps continuous, equivalent to approximately 1,200 watts at 12 volts. Two batteries connected properly in parallel double the available continuous-current capability.
As a result, one 100Ah battery should not be assumed to continuously power a 1,500- or 1,800-watt cooking appliance. A larger parallel bank or a higher-output battery may be required.
The 270Ah 12V GC3 offers 300 amps of continuous current capability, making it better suited to high-demand inverter systems in a single-battery format. Final sizing must still account for wiring, fusing, inverter ratings, installation requirements, and the rest of the RV’s loads.
Calculate the Energy Used Per Meal
To estimate battery consumption:
Appliance wattage × operating hours ÷ inverter efficiency = battery watt-hours used
For a 1,500-watt oven running for 30 minutes with a 90% efficient inverter:
1,500W × 0.5 hours ÷ 0.90 = approximately 833Wh
To convert that to amp-hours from a nominal 12.8-volt lithium bank:
833Wh ÷ 12.8V = approximately 65Ah
That represents only the oven. Refrigeration, lighting, water pumps, fans, electronics, and inverter standby consumption must also be included in your daily energy budget.
Plan How You Will Recharge
Cooking with electricity is much easier when the battery bank can be replenished consistently.
Common RV charging sources include:
- Solar panels
- Shore power
- A generator
- A properly designed alternator-charging system
- A combination of multiple sources
Solar production varies with season, location, shade, panel angle, weather, and available daylight. An appliance may use energy in 20 minutes that takes several hours of solar production to replace.

Can You Run an RV Convection Oven on Battery Power?
You can run an RV convection oven on battery power when the inverter and battery bank are sized for its input wattage and cooking duration.
Convection ovens are among the more demanding RV kitchen loads because their heating elements may draw approximately 1,500 to 1,800 watts. The Contoure convection microwave used in one of the recipes below lists 1,500 watts in convection mode, while the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro lists 1,800 watts.
A practical system commonly requires:
- A pure sine wave inverter large enough for the oven and any simultaneous loads
- A battery bank capable of delivering the necessary continuous DC current
- Appropriately sized DC cables and overcurrent protection
- Enough stored energy for preheating and cooking
- Adequate charging capacity to replace the energy afterward
Preheating matters. A recipe that calls for 30 minutes of baking may keep the inverter operating longer once preheat time is included.
When estimating consumption, use the appliance’s full rated wattage. Actual use may be lower as the thermostat cycles the heating element, but sizing around a best-case duty cycle can leave the system unable to support the appliance under demanding conditions.
Can You Run an Instant Pot While Boondocking?
An Instant Pot is often a practical electric cooking appliance for boondocking because it can pressure cook, slow cook, sauté, steam, prepare rice, and keep food warm in one compact unit.
The current 6-quart Instant Pot Duo is rated at 1,000 watts. At full output, that represents approximately 87 amps from a 12.8-volt battery bank through a 90% efficient inverter.
The appliance does not necessarily draw 1,000 watts for the entire cooking cycle. It uses high power to build heat and pressure, then cycles as needed to maintain temperature. Nevertheless, the inverter and battery must be capable of supplying the full rated load.
A single 100Ah Battle Born battery may technically support a 1,000-watt appliance, but it leaves limited current margin for other loads. A larger bank provides more operating margin and reduces the portion of the battery consumed by one meal.
You can conserve additional energy by:
- Using hot water heated by a propane water heater when appropriate for the recipe
- Avoiding an unnecessarily long keep-warm period
- Cooking larger batches
- Allowing pressure to release naturally when the recipe permits
- Running other high-wattage appliances at a different time

Can You Run a Blender on RV Batteries?
A blender can usually run from RV batteries because it operates for a short period, even though its instantaneous wattage may be relatively high.
Full-size countertop blenders may draw more than 1,000 watts and can have a brief startup or peak demand. Smaller personal or immersion blenders may require substantially less power. Current manufacturer examples range from a 625-watt immersion blender to countertop models with more than 1,000 watts of motor power.
Because blending sessions are short, the total energy use is generally modest. A 1,200-watt blender running for two minutes would use only about ~44Wh from the battery after estimated inverter losses.
However, the inverter must still handle the motor’s running and startup demand. Check both the blender’s label and the inverter’s surge rating, particularly when blending ice or thick frozen ingredients.
Can You Run a Coffee Maker Off-Grid?
Yes. A standard drip coffee maker can run off-grid from an appropriately sized inverter and battery bank.
Coffee makers are sometimes underestimated because they are small, but heating water requires substantial power. Current residential coffee makers can range from around 900 watts to well over 1,000 watts.
A 1,000-watt coffee maker operating for 10 minutes would use an estimated 185Wh, or approximately 14.5Ah from a 12.8-volt battery bank after inverter losses.
The warming plate can continue consuming energy long after brewing ends. To conserve battery power:
- Turn off the coffee maker after brewing
- Transfer coffee into an insulated carafe
- Brew only the amount you plan to drink
- Avoid running the coffee maker at the same time as an oven, microwave, or induction cooktop
For smaller electrical systems, pour-over, French press, and stovetop methods allow water to be heated with propane rather than pulling a large load through the inverter.

Choosing an Off-Grid Cooking Energy Source
Each cooking energy source has advantages and limitations. A resilient RV kitchen often uses more than one.
Campfire
A campfire does not consume propane or battery power and can handle grilling, roasting, and Dutch-oven cooking. It is less dependable during poor weather, in developed campgrounds, or during fire restrictions.

Propane
Propane provides high heat with relatively little electrical demand. It remains useful when solar production is limited or the battery bank is low.
Installed RV propane appliances should be maintained and operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Portable camp stoves, grills, and other outdoor combustion appliances must remain outside the RV.
Generator Power
A generator can run high-wattage cooking appliances and recharge the battery bank, but it requires fuel, produces exhaust, and introduces noise.
Generators must remain outside and well away from doors, windows, and vents. Never operate a generator inside an RV, compartment, garage, or other enclosed area.
Solar and Battery Power
Solar panels paired with a lithium battery bank provide quiet electrical power without operating a combustion engine at the campsite.
The panels generate energy while suitable sunlight is available. The battery bank stores that energy so it can be used during clouds, shade, early mornings, evenings, or periods when an appliance demands more power than the solar array is producing at that moment.
The battery does not create energy, so the system must balance daily consumption with available solar, alternator, generator, or shore-power charging.

Why Lithium Batteries Work Well for Off-Grid RV Cooking
Electric heating appliances place a large load on an RV battery bank. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are well suited to these demands because they maintain a relatively stable voltage, can deliver high current, provide substantial usable capacity, and accept charging efficiently.

Sourdough Bread

Ingredients
- 500 grams of bread flour (I use King Arthur)
- 150 grams fully active sourdough starter
- 9 grams salt (I use kosher)
- 285 grams of lukewarm water
- 1 tbs. all-purpose flour for dusting
Instructions
- Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl until a ball forms. Be sure to incorporate all the flour. After forming a shaggy ball, cover the bowl and let rest for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, use the pull-and-fold method around the dough ball. You will start by grabbing from under the side of the ball, gently stretching a portion of the dough, and then folding it back onto itself. Pull and fold each section of dough until you have gone around the entire ball of dough two times. This process helps align the gluten strands in the flour, resulting in a light and airy texture when baked. As you move around the dough, keep tension so that it retains its shape as you go along.
- Cover and let it sit overnight or at least 5-6 hrs. You will know it's ready when it has doubled in size.
- Once ready to bake, gently scrape it from the bowl onto some parchment paper lightly floured with all-purpose flour. Form it into a ball to form your loaf shape. Be sure to not push down or knead it, just gently form it into a ball. Let it rest there while you preheat your oven.
- Set oven to 475 F with your Dutch oven inside. After 30 minutes, pull out the Dutch oven and lower the heat to 425 F.
- Cut a slit down your loaf. This helps create a more even rise and allows steam to escape during baking. Carefully place your bread on the parchment paper inside your Dutch oven.
- Bake covered for 20 minutes; remove the lid and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the loaf cool on a rack. I usually let it rest for at least a half hour before cutting it, but sometimes it’s too hard to resist the smell, and I give in after 15 minutes.
- Once it has cooled, dig in!
