What is a Battery Management System?

A battery management system (BMS) is a set of electronics that monitors and manages the battery’s performance. It is critical to the safe operation and overall longevity of the battery. Battle Born Batteries have an internal BMS that monitors each individual cell in the battery pack. Then, it calculates how much current can safely go in and come out without damaging the battery. This ensures the batteries are always operating within the range of safe conditions. If unsafe operating conditions are detected, the BMS shuts down the battery, protecting the user and keeping the battery safe.

How Does a BMS Protect Your Marine Vessel Power System?

Ensure that your battery bank will be able to function without encountering unsafe operating conditions. Avoiding the potential for low and high voltage, extreme temperatures, and high discharge currents will keep your system running smoothly. Although it’s possible for less-than-ideal operating conditions to arise, a BMS will give you peace of mind. While a BMS is critical to the safety of your marine vessel power system and to complying with ABYC-13 standards, it doesn’t monitor everything. The BMS is not designed to monitor high charge current rates. It is up to the user to ensure that their system has been configured to keep the battery charge current below the recommended 0.5C rate.
