Why Add More Solar Panels to Your RV?
Your RV's original solar system may have been sized for very different power needs.
Factory-installed solar packages, in particular, may provide enough energy to maintain batteries or support basic electrical use without being designed around extended off-grid camping. Your needs can also change as you spend more time with the RV and learn how much power you actually use.
You may want to add solar panels to your RV if:

Step 1: How Much More Solar You Actually Need

Step 2: Make Sure You Have Room for More Panels
Electrical capacity isn't always the limiting factor on an RV. Sometimes, it's the roof.

You can add the new panels to the solar array that already feeds your existing charge controller, or you can create an entirely separate array with its own wiring and charge controller.
For simplicity, we'll refer to the group of panels feeding one charge controller as a solar array. You may also hear the term string, particularly when referring to panels connected together in series within an array.

Wiring in new panels to the existing wires can sometimes be an option; however, you can't simply connect another panel because there is an open connector or unused space on the roof. The existing charge controller, panels, wiring, and circuit protection all need to support the expanded array.

Your solar charge controller is one of the most important components to check before adding panels to an existing array.
The charge controller sits between the solar array and your battery bank. It regulates the electricity coming from the panels so the batteries receive the appropriate charging voltage and current.

Every solar charge controller has electrical limits. Depending on the controller, these may include:

The array must remain below the controller's maximum allowable PV voltage under the conditions your RV could experience.
Some MPPT charge controllers allow a solar array to be moderately oversized relative to the controller's maximum charging output. In these systems, the array may be capable of producing more power than the controller can deliver during peak conditions, so the controller limits its output to its rated maximum. However, acceptable oversizing varies by manufacturer and does not mean you can exceed the controller's specified PV voltage or current limits.

Ideally, you would expand an existing solar array with identical panels. In the real world, that's not always possible.
Your original panels may no longer be available, or a different size may fit your remaining roof space better.
You can mix different solar panels, but you need to look at more than wattage.
Before combining panels, compare specifications including:

Check the Existing Solar Wiring and Circuit Protection
Adding panels changes the electrical characteristics of the solar array.
Series connections increase voltage. Parallel connections increase current. Depending on how you expand the system, conductors and protection devices that were appropriate for the original array may no longer be adequate.

The original solar system can remain largely unchanged.
Can You Have Two Solar Charge Controllers on One Battery Bank?
Yes. Two — or even more — properly configured solar charge controllers can charge the same RV battery bank.
Each controller independently manages its own solar array and then supplies regulated charging power to the same battery system. The controllers do not have to be the same model or communicate with each other; each simply needs to be compatible with the battery bank and configured with appropriate charging parameters.
The controllers do not need to share the same solar panel voltage or array design because the PV side of each controller is independent.
That means one array could use one panel model or series/parallel configuration while the second uses something completely different, provided each array stays within the specifications of its own charge controller.
On the battery side, the controllers should be configured with compatible charging parameters for the same battery chemistry and system voltage. Not necessarily.
If your existing charge controller has plenty of available capacity and you can purchase panels that match the existing array well, expanding the original system may be simpler and require less wiring and equipment.
A second controller becomes particularly attractive when expanding the original array would require compromises in panel matching, controller sizing, shading, or wiring.
The goal isn't simply to have more controllers. It's to let each group of panels operate efficiently while keeping the overall system safe and manageable.
What About Adding Portable Solar?
Portable solar provides another way to increase charging capacity, and electrically it often works much like adding a second independent solar source.
If your RV roof is already full, portable solar can be one of the easiest ways to add more solar capacity.

Portable panels also have an advantage fixed rooftop panels can't offer: you can move them.
That can be particularly useful when you want to park your RV in the shade while placing the solar panels in a sunny location.
Portable panels may make sense if:
