The Battle Born Educational Series | Battery Design & Safety
Some Battle Born batteries are available with optional integrated heating, designed to allow safe charging in cold conditions where standard lithium batteries would not accept a charge.
In cold environments, temperature becomes a limiting factor for lithium battery charging. Heated battery models are designed to address that limitation by automatically warming the cells before charging begins.
Why Heating Is Needed
LiFePO4 batteries can operate and discharge in cold temperatures, but charging at low temperatures can damage the internal cells.
Because of this, lithium batteries are designed to restrict charging when temperatures fall below a safe threshold.
Heated battery models provide a way to safely bring the battery back into a chargeable temperature range without requiring manual intervention.
How the Heating System Works
Inside heated models is an integrated heating system that operates automatically.

When the internal temperature of the battery drops to approximately 35°F and a charge source is present, the heating system activates.
Instead of immediately allowing current to flow into the battery, the system first warms the internal cells.
Once the battery reaches a safe temperature range, normal charging begins.
This process ensures that charging only occurs under conditions that support long-term battery health.
Powered by the Battery Itself
One important detail is how the heating system is powered.
The heater draws power from the battery itself, not from an external source. It operates with a relatively low power draw, typically around 28 watts when active.

This allows the heating function to operate automatically without requiring additional wiring or system configuration.
Managed by the BMS
All heating and charging behavior is controlled by the Battery Management System (BMS).
The BMS:
- Monitors internal temperature
- Prevents charging below safe limits
- Activates heating when needed
- Allows charging once conditions are safe
This ensures that the battery is always operating within its intended limits.
Internal vs Ambient Temperature
It is important to understand that heating is based on internal battery temperature, not just the surrounding air.
For example, batteries installed inside compartments or enclosed spaces may operate at a higher internal temperature than the outside environment.
This means heating behavior is determined by the actual condition of the cells, not just ambient temperature readings.
Standard vs Heated Models
Heated battery models provide an additional layer of functionality for cold-weather operation.
Standard Battle Born batteries do not include integrated heating, but they still rely on the BMS to prevent charging under unsafe conditions.
In both cases, the system is protected. Heated models simply add the ability to actively bring the battery into a safe charging range.
The Bottom Line
Heated lithium batteries are designed to make cold-weather charging safer and more practical.
By automatically warming the internal cells before allowing charge, they protect the battery while maintaining system usability in lower temperatures.
With integrated heating and BMS control working together, the system can manage temperature conditions automatically and operate reliably across a wider range of environments.
